Bayern Munich got off to a flying start to the 2026/27 Bundesliga season with a 5-1 win over VfB Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena slightly less than a week after beating Borussia Dortmund 2-1 at the Westfalenstadion to win the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup.
Sebastian Hoeneß’ side made it look like it was going to be a tough night at the office for the German Rekordmeister, but after Josha Vagnoman’s goal for Stuttgart canceled out Dayot Upamecano’s first half header, it was well and truly one-way traffic
for the Bundesliga champions. Michael Olise made it 2-1 just three minutes after Vagnoman’s equalizer and the floodgates opened. Bayern went on to score unanswered goals via an own goal from Vagnoman, Aleksandar Pavlović, and Luis Díaz, the latter of the three both assisted by new Bayern signing Ismael Saibari, who shared the honor of a brace of assists in the match with Joshua Kimmich.
Despite not being able to keep a clean sheet, it was also a massive night for keeper Manuel Neuer. The Bayern keeper set two big milestones with his involvement in the match.
With his place in the starting lineup, Neuer featured in his 600th competitive match for Bayern and also started in his 21st consecutive Bundesliga season (via @iMiaSanMia). Now, only Thomas Müller, Sepp Maier, Oliver Kahn, and Gerd Müller have made more competitive appearances than Neuer, but the keeper is closing in on surpassing Gerd Müller’s mark of 613 matches and Kahn’s mark of 632. He could surpass both marks this season, but it will really depend on his health, fitness, and just how much time Jonas Urbig gets in all competitions.
It’s still not yet known whether or not this will be Neuer’s last season at Bayern, but he’ll certainly keep trying to set even more records and tackle more milestones while he’s still there while he continues to mentor Urnig and prep him to eventually become the club’s number one keeper.
