WWE star Sami Zayn is turning 42 years old this summer, and he’s well aware that he’s much closer to the end of his pro wrestling career than the beginning. In an interview with Witty Whittier, Zayn said ambition starts to get replaced with gratitude the older he gets, because he knows how lucky he is to still do this job for a living. At one point, Zayn came close to revealing how many years he thinks he has left in the ring.
“I definitely feel like now, more than I ever have, just the realization…it
never really completely goes over my head how lucky I am to be here to begin with. ‘Cause this is, again, literally something I dreamed about from childhood, and now I’m actually here, insane enough as it is to actually achieve your childhood goals, dreams, whatever you want to call them.
…There’s always gonna be this ambitious drive, but it kind of gets replaced, the older you get [with] a gratitude that you get to do it for another day. I remember several years ago being on a European tour thinking, I don’t know how many more of these there really are. When you’re in it, you think it’s just gonna keep going forever. It’s kind of like when you’re in high school, you just feel like those years are gonna last forever. But then when you’re an adult, you’ve been out of high school [10 to 15] years, you’re like, man, high school was nothing. It’s a blip in your life.
So I’ve been lucky that WWE and my time in this business has been more than a blip. But I realize that this time will probably be coming to an end within the next, you know, I don’t want to put a number of years on it, but definitely closer to the end than the beginning. So I’m just very, very grateful to be a part of it still. Yeah, it’s just not lost on me. It’s not lost on me. This is great.”
Do you think Sami Zayn will spend the rest of his pro wrestling career working in WWE, and possibly winning a world title there? Let me know in the comments below what you’d still like to see Zayn do in the ring, besides murdering more Gingerbread Men, before it’s time to hang up his wrestling boots.
