Kevin Willard is now the head coach of Villanova and there are some Maryland fans who are still unhappy about it.
It was a bit of a controversial split for Willard and Maryland last year. On Saturday, there
was a contingent of Terps’ fans who sat around the Villanova bench as the Wildcats defeated Georgetown in Washington, D.C.
Willard was asked about this following an 80-73 win over the Hoyas.
“They wasted a Saturday,” Willard said to reporters. “I don’t know what the f*** they were doing. I mean, they’ve got nothing better to do than to come look at my bald ass. I don’t know what they’re doing.”
Willard was asked a follow-up question about his thoughts on Maryland fans still being this upset with him.
“I don’t know. I have no thoughts on that.”
Willard spent three years with Maryland. He put together a record of 65-39 and led the Terps to two appearances in the NCA Tournament. Most recently, he led the team to the Sweet 16 last year.
Rumors began swirling about Willard being linked to Villanova once it decided to move on from Kyle Neptune. During the NCAA Tournament run, Willard spoke publicly about needing more resources within the program and commenting on the state of the program’s NIL. Willard did not sign an extension with Maryland as then athletic director Damon Evans left for SMU.
Willard ended up taking the Villanova job following the tournament. Maryland hired Buzz Williams to take over. The Terps are currently 8-14 overall and 1-10 in the Big Ten.
Willard has led Villanova to an 18-5 record thus far, with a 9-3 mark in the Big East.
