Bayern Munich’s women’s team advanced to the semifinals of the DFB-Pokal with a comfortable 3-0 win over Hamburger SV on Wednesday.
The defending champions were coming into the game brimming with confidence, having failed to win only one domestic game this season so far. However, Bayern was hit with a slew of injuries, with the likes of Klara Bühl, Alara, Katharina Naschenweng, and more sidelined. Momoko Tanikawa was also absent due to her participation in the Asian Cup.
The absences did little to
stop the Bavarians, though, as they took an early lead after only six minutes. Edna Imade took advantage of some poor goalkeeping and headed home from close range.
The rest of the first half and the early parts of the second half were not that entertaining to watch, as bad weather slowed the game down. Nevertheless, it was Bayern who looked more comfortable throughout, and on 66 minutes, they extended their advantage through Franziska Kett, who rounded the keeper after a clever dummy from Arianna Caruso.
HSV rarely troubled Bayern, and the visitors effectively put the game to bed with two minutes remaining on the clock. Linda Dallmann’s nifty flick from a corner found Natalia Padilla-Bidas, who tapped in to seal the deal. Replays showed that Dallmann may have been offside, though. That said, with or without the goal, Bayern’s victory was never in doubt, and the Bavarians cruise into the semifinals.
The other three teams in the semifinals are VfL Wolfsburg, Carl Zeiss Jena, and SGS Essen. Bayern were drawn against the latter, and were also given their first and final home game of the tournament. Quite remarkably, the current top two and bottom two teams of the Bundesliga make up the final four. Bayern have faced Essen once this season, winning 4-1. They also happen to face them next Friday in the return leg of the Bundesliga.
