We also have another new feature we are introducing, and this one is in honor of our new writer Lucas who, in case you did not already know, is a quarterback for the Case Western Reserve Spartans. So each week, we are going to give a quick scoreboard on the Case Western football team as well as the other Spartans of college football.
Michigan State is one of two Spartans in the FBS, the other one being San Jose State of the Mountain West. Moving down to the FCS level, there is Norfolk State in the Mid-Eastern
Athletic. There are two other Spartans in Division I who do not have a football program – UNC Greensboro and South Carolina-Upstate.
At the Division II level, there are two more Spartan programs but, again, neither of them have a football program. Those schools are University of Tampa and St. Thomas Aquinas College in New York. St. Thomas Aquinas does have a Sprint Football team, which is where a weight limit of 178 pounds is strictly enforced.
In Division III, there are 7 Spartans around the country. For this article, the only one that matters is the one in Cleveland, Ohio. Case Western, who is a member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (yes, that apostrophe is supposed to be there), had their first game of the season this past weekend, and we have first-hand reporting of how that game went. CWR went out to the east coast to play the Rowan Profs of the New Jersey Conference. Case Western had a lead at halftime when the game faced a delay due to inclement weather in the area. The second half eventually was allowed to start and Rowan took a 17-14 lead. Then another weather delay was called, and this one did not let up. Rather than continuing to wait, the two coaches agreed to call the game a tie. The official final score was 17-17. The Case Western Reserve Spartans are 0-0-1 and are playing at Wabash College in Indiana next weekend.
Back to the other teams in the Spartan-Verse, Norfolk State picked up their first win this past weekend with a 34-31 triumph over Virginia State. They are now 1-1.
And lastly, San Jose State fell to 0-2 with their trip to Austin resulting in a 38-7 loss against Texas.
For the week, the Spartan-Verse went 2-1-1.
