It’s been a wild ride in Liga MX Femenil over the past few weeks and it’s going to get crazier with only four more weeks to go.
Before the international FIFA break, week 10 was left unfinished with the Clásico Nacional between Club América and Chivas de Guadalajara match suspended due to Guadalajara’s unrest. So the league resumed with that game that was billed as a true rivalry, one of the biggest in women’s soccer.
Elsewhere in the league, Monterrey is leading the league in points, teams keep falling
victim to bad refereeing, Mazatlán keeps attracting the attention of the league, and much more.
Bragging rights and three points
While the rivalry between Tigres and Rayadas has lost some steam with the passing seasons, the one between América and Chivas is pretty much alive.
Those two teams were supposed to play each other in week 9, but the unrest in the city of Guadalajara forced the league to postpone it.
Nonetheless, it was played right after the international break and what seemed to be a party on the enemy territory for América soon became a nightmare.
After América scored two goals through Geyse and Nancy Antonio and it seemed as if the Eagles were going to earn three points. However, if there’s something coach Antonio Contreras is known for: how to sub players that will make an impact on the game. That’s how Denise Castro brought Chivas in the game again after being subbed in. Then, an own goal (Sandra Paños) after Carolina Jaramillo’s powerful shot and Adriana “Boyi” Iturbide’s tally turned the tables in the host’s favor.
Besides bragging rights, Chivas won three points that put them second in the table.
An update on Club América’s injured players
Although Club América got a good result against Toluca (2-0) in week 12, the downside was that young sensation Montse Saldívar tore up her quadricep and most likely will miss the remainder of the season.
Added to them, and coming into week 14, goalkeeper Itzel Velasco won’t be available, as well as defender Karia Rodríguez, midfielder Irene Guerrero, and forward Alondra Cabanillas. Add those five players to long-term injuries of Karen Luna, Priscila da Silva, Aylin Avilez and Bruna Vilamala, and you have almost an entire potential starting XI out.
Injuries alone are bad but these injuries also couldn’t have come at a worse time. Why? Because América is playing Tigres in week 14.
The good news for the Eagles? Brazilian international Geyse Ferreira has finally found the back of the net and has scored five goals in four matches. Will she put her name on the score sheet against Tigres? Her teammates for sure are counting on it.
Cruz Azul sacked their coach
Despite Cruz Azul’s strong performances since coach Diego Testas took over, the club let him go, citing a “mutual agreement.”
Many players went to social media to send the coach good wishes, in addition to thanking him for taking them to another level. And it’s no surprise because since he got hired in late 2024, he achieved a club-record points and reached the club’s first semifinal in playoffs in the Apertura 2025 tournament.
Nonetheless, despite keeping the team in playoff positions after 10 games in Clausura 2026, the club announced that from week 11 on, interim coach Israel de Real was going to take Testas’s job.
How has he done so far? La Máquina has collected three wins: 3-0 against Necaxa, 2-0 against Santos, and 1-0 against Mazatlán. Entering week 14, the team is in playoffs position in the 7th spot.
Mazatlán is keeping the momentum
Two wins and two losses against Rayadas are not shabby results for Las Cañoneras, who are having the tournament of their lives. What is more, despite the two losses, they’re keeping themselves in the top 10 in the table. They have some tough games coming but the belief of being among the top 8 at the end of the tournament is still there.
Seeing Mazatlán players on the ideal week XI is not something unheard of anymore and Aby Martínez, whose goal is shown above, has been included in that XI along with forward Lawal Taiwo for week 13.
After the loss against Cruz Azul (0-1), they’re playing Toluca in week 14. That’s a tough game for them but let’s see what they can do against Patrice Lair’s team.
Tigres cruised past Querétaro in an empty stadium
Club Tigres planned a double header last Sunday since their women’s and men’s teams were playing the same club, Gallos de Querétaro.
The men played first and ended with a goalless draw. It was expected that the fans would stay to support the women’s team. Nonetheless, most of them left, although the women’s side is the most successful team in the country.
In the end, Tigres femenil won 6-0 but the win felt bittersweet since the players felt hurt after seeing the men’s team fans didn’t stay.
“Would’ve stayed,” tweeted top league and team goalscorer, Diana Ordóñez, quoting a tweet where you could see the stark difference in support of both teams.
Entering week 14, Tigres is 3rd, three points shy of Monterrey, 1st in the table.
Rayadas de Monterrey and Pachuca on top
Although Pachuca striker Charlyn Corral has lost some steam — Tigres’ Diana Ordóñez is currently the league’s top goalscorer —, she’s still producing and is third in the Golden Boot department with 12 tallies. Tuzas is also second in the table with 30 points, three points shy of Monterrey.
Even though Tuzas cannot leapfrog Rayadas in points, they have the chance to take the lead in the tournament depending on the number of goals they score. Why? Because they’re playing each other next Friday. Tuzas might have the upper hand here, since they’re playing at home.
And what about Monterrey? Although they’re not a flashy team by any means, they have found the consistency they lost in the past couple of years. It’s good to see what coach Amandine Miquel has been able to do with the same team that has been a disappointment in the past few seasons.
Officiating concerns
Controversy regarding refereeing is not unheard of in Liga MX Femenil. What is more, it is pretty common nowadays and week 13 brought another mistake by the referees.
It was in the Pachuca vs Chivas game when the referee granted a PK for Pachuca due to an alleged handball inside the box (38th minute).
In the video, it is clear that there’s no handball infraction. In the end, Corral converted the PK into a goal and at the end of the 90’, the teams divided the spoils.
Entering week 13, Chivas is 5th, with a win they would have jumped to the second position.
