Less than a week after making his major league debut, Konnor Griffin, the top prospect in baseball has agreed on a long term contract extension with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The nine-year $140 million deal is the largest in franchise history and includes a $12 million signing bonus.
This is a deal that has been being negotiated for some time now, with some sources claiming that they started as early as spring training. ESPN’s Jeff Passan broke the news today that Griffin and the club had officially
come to terms on an extension. This is the largest contract signed by a player in his rookie season.
It was well known that this was a deal that was going to hold a lot of value and it was a priority for the club to cement Griffin’s future in Pittsburgh. Owner and chairman Bob Nutting spoke on how important it was to sign Griffin and what it represents for the club.
“Signing Konnor is a meaningful commitment to this team, this city and our fans. It reflects our belief in Konnor, in this season’s club and in the future of our organization,” Nutting said. “Konnor represents everything we value in a player — exceptional talent, strong character, a team-first mentality and a maturity that stood out to all of us from the beginning. He is the right person, from the right family. This is another important step in the work we have been doing to build a winning team, for this year and going forward.”
Griffin also spoke at his press conference stating, “I want to win for the city. I want to do it for them.”
With just one season in the minors under his belt, Griffin became the number one prospect in baseball after slashing .333/.415/.527 across three levels of the minor leagues. He walked away with several individual awards last season to include a minor league Gold Glove Award and the Minor League Player of the Year Award. He would debut in Triple-A Indianapolis to start the 2026 season where he hit .438/.571/.625 with three steals and seven hits in 16 at bats.
Since debuting with the Pirates the team is 4-1 with an overall record of 7-4. Pittsburgh currently has the fifth best record in baseball and looks transformed from the cellar dwelling team that they were just a year ago. In Pittsburgh Griffin is hitting .176/.300/.235 and has 3 RBIs. Griffin is the first teenage position player to appear in the majors since Juan Soto did back in 2018.
The future of the Pirates is Konnor Griffin, who at just 19-years-old is already making waves as the top prospect in baseball and owner of the biggest contract in franchise history. Griffin spoke on his transition to Pittsburgh and what it means to be a part of this team.
“I’m pumped to be a Pirate and be a part of this wonderful clubhouse,” Griffin said. “A lot of great talent back there and coaches and staff. Thank you all for being here to support me. Y’all made this transition to the big leagues super easy. And I’m just pumped to go compete. The goal is to win. The goal is to win a World Series. And I think we’ve got a great clubhouse to go do that. I’m pumped to be part of it.”
