The San Francisco 49ers announced they signed Andrew Farmer II to the practice squad and released linebacker Stone Blanton. Farmer, 6’4″, 250 pounds, spent the preseason with the Denver Broncos, where he played the majority of his snaps as an edge rusher. He has not appeared in a regular-season game since 2023, when he totaled 61 defensive snaps with the Los Angeles Chargers.
With Clelin Ferrell likely to be elevated a couple more times, the only pass rusher on the practice squad was Williams Bradley-King.
The following players will not practice today:
Ricky Pearsall (knee)
Shanahan reiterated that Pearsall hasn’t had any setbacks, but his recovery from the knee injury is taking longer than the team expected. Keeping the topic of wide receivers, Shanahan believes Brandon Aiyuk will play this season:
“I’m pretty confident he will eventually. At least, open up his practice window. We talk about it being week-to-week right now. Still waiting until he’s ready.”
It’s a matter of whether Aiyuk can hit his specific GPS marks and other metrics before he can return to practice.
These players will be limited:
Dee Winters (knee)
Jake Brendel (hamstring)
Tatum Bethune (thigh)
Bryce Huff (hamstring)
Brock Purdy (toe)
The plan is to push Brock Purdy more this week and give him more first-team reps
Shanahan said he will “see how the week goes” with left guard Ben Bartch and whether he resumes as the starter: “I thought Spenc[er Burford] did a real good job last week. He’s not limited today. He’s full go, which gives him a better chance. We’ll see how the week plays out.”
Yetur Gross-Matos pulled his hamstring, but Shanahan said he’ll return at some point this year.
