Nigel McGuinness has ambitious plans for the summer. Already on his plate was challenging Lee Moriarty for the ROH Pure Championship at Death Before Dishonor, then came along the AEW Continental Challenge Cup with the final at All In in Wembley Stadium. McGuinness couldn’t pass up the opportunity to compete on the grandest stage in the UK.
In the first round of the tournament, McGuinness suffered an ankle injury at the hands of Katsuyori Shibata. That injury put his plans in jeopardy. Good news is that
x-rays showed no serious damage, so McGuinness will push through the pain to continue in the Continental Cup against Hechicero for Dynamite on Wednesday night (Aug. 19, 2026). McGuinness’ status for ROH Death Before Dishonor was still a question for Friday night (Aug. 21, 2026).
McGuinness answered that question with analogies to Jarvis Cocker, gambling, Andre Agassi, and Star Wars. The short version is that, yes, McGuinness will be in that match.
The storyline is Moriarty owning McGuinness’ number in the ring with victories in a Pure title defense and a 30-minute iron man challenge. McGuinness earned his way for one final shot, and he added a sweetener for Taigastyle. If Moriarty wins, then McGuinness will not wrestle again in ROH.
McGuinness thought he would be out six weeks. In the words of Pulp singer Jarvis Cocker, “Something changed.” McGuinness vowed to himself that he would take the match if cleared to compete. That doesn’t mean he will be at 100% health. That begs the question why do it. Why bet his career in ROH when not at 100%?
McGuinness continued with a gambling analogy. He is pot committed with money on the table. McGuinness also discussed inspiration from Andre Agassi. The tennis star wrote about an inertia pulling him toward a win or a loss. McGuinness feels that same energy pulling him to the ROH PPV as destiny to either win Pure gold or never wrestle in ROH again. There is nothing McGuinness can do to stop that, whether it means ending up like Luke Skywalker or Obi-Wan Kenobi.
That was a poetic response from McGuinness. I enjoyed the analogies up to when he lost me at Star Wars. I don’t know what the comparison to Luke and Obi-Wan means in context for this match. Granted, I’m not a huge Star Wars fan, but I do know the basics. I kicked that question over to the Cageside Seats office chat, and here is Sean Rueter’s response, which creates a whole new multiverse of material.
Sean: I guess Nigel is using Disney trilogy lore to say if he wins he’ll live to build a wrestling school where Buddy Danielson can turn heel and join forces with a force-animated CM Punk clone in an attempt to destroy AEW before ultimately redeeming himself as a ghost by thwarting Dark Buddy’s scheme to kill the forces of Gen. Bella and her new band of babyface rebels?
