The fifth full-team practice of Kansas City Chiefs training camp took place on Monday with a few notable absences. Head coach Andy Reid addressed the injury status of multiple players to open up his post-practice press conference in St. Joe.
Wide receivers Cyrus Allen, Xavier Worthy and defensive end Ashton Gillotte were the three active players unavailable to practice. Reid reassured reporters on Allen’s scary-looking injury from Saturday’s practice, confirming the report by Sam McDowell of The Kansas
City Star.
“[It] ended up being a bone bruise on his shin area there, so it’ll be a day or two here,” Reid said about Allen.
Later on, he added that the team has “to get the swelling out of there, so however many days it takes to get the swelling out.”
“Gillotte has a hamstring strain, Xavier has a shoulder sprain… it’ll be a few days for that, and we’ll see how that goes,” Reid added in his opening statement.
Reid was asked directly about rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane, who started this stretch of padded practices in the yellow, non-contact jersey with shorts. Throughout Monday’s practice, Delane could be seen running on and off the field during team periods.
It sounds like Delane is simply refusing to miss out on his first training camp in Kansas City.
“He’s a tough nut,” Reid described Delane. “A lot of guys probably wouldn’t go out there and play with what he’s got, but he wants to be out there; he wants to learn. That’s what he wants to do… we have to keep him out of contact. Right now, that’s important until that thing heals up. Footwork and all that is great; go do all of that, no problem, but we just have to wait until it’s healed up.”
It’s also important to take note of Reid’s update on Mia Bieniemy, the wife of offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, who is recovering from last week’s frightening incident.
“On the Eric Bieniemy side of it, Mia’s doing better,” Reid said. “She keeps improving by the day. That’s a positive. There’s no timetable on EB coming back or any of that, he just needs to take care of business there. When he gets back here, he gets back here.”
The Chiefs will be back at it in St. Joe on Tuesday morning, practice starting at 9:15 a.m. on “Ambassador Day.”
