Alexander Volkov scored a big win at UFC 321 and his opponent didn’t do himself any favors.
At Saturday’s event in Abu Dhabi, Volkov eked out split decision win over Jailton Almeida in a heavyweight bout
with major contender stakes. The result isn’t likely to endear either man with UFC CEO Dana White, but it’s Almeida in particular who disappointed after coming off of back-to-back first-round finishes.
Almeida’s expert wrestling was on display, but he executed little to no offense from advantageous positions. In fact, it was Volkov throwing most of the strikes throughout the fight even as he worked to prevent Almeida from passing and going for submissions.
Regardless of whether fans agree with the judges or not, everyone seems to be on the same page in regards to Almeida’s bizarre performance and the lackluster fight.
“Good decision,” veteran analyst Dan Hardy wrote on social media. “I like Volkov. Almeida acted like he was terrified of fighting. Weak performance from him.”
