Michael Carrick took over Manchester United in January and they didn’t know what was a loss under the new boss until March. Having done so without reinventing the wheel, their overly passive posture at Stamford Bridge wasn’t much of a surprise.
Estêvão, who got a starting spot alongside Cole Palmer and Pedro Neto, tried to make the most out of it. His immense impact was cut short in less than 20 minutes due to injury, with a not so impactful Alejandro Garnacho subbing in for him.
Chelsea had the lion’s
share of possession, shot volume and every other meaningful metric you can think of. They didn’t look like they had the confidence of holding United back. When Bruno Fernandes assisted Matheus Cunha for their goal in the first half, it almost felt like déjà vu.
United stayed somewhat comfortable with holding their lead and doing not much else. Chelsea did everything they could to equalise and with better luck they would have done it. But if you don’t create your own luck, no one will do it for you.
- Estêvão starts!
- …and he’s gone in under 20 minutes.
- Another day, another loss.
- Next up: Brighton away in the Premier League.
