Germany is undergoing a shuffle with former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool FC manager Jürgen Klopp at the helm. As part of Klopp’s experiments with the team, he made two starting squads, deploying them for two games each. Serge Gnabry was handed the captain’s armband to lead Germany for the final two games of this break.
After securing the win against Serbia in his club’s home in Munich, Gnabry expressed his joy at a proud milestone in his career. “It was a very special experience. I’m incredibly
proud to have been captain today. The win makes the day even sweeter, and we’re going home with a really good feeling. Getting wins under our belt is important because they give us confidence. It’s a process, and every success helps to accelerate it,” said Gnabry (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Can Klopp draw the best out of Gnabry ?
Gnabry was eased back into the national side with mini stints in the first two games. The attacker returned from a groin injury, and is still searching for his remarkable form from last season. Against Serbia, Gnabry started on the right. His involvement in attacks were relatively limited. Gnabry thrives on good chemistry and can be a dangerous playmaker, as seen in the previous season.
Being in a fairly new setup, Gnabry resorted to some poaching runs into the box when not involved in build-up. He registered 2 shots from difficult angles and missed his best shot as he struck it straight at the keeper’s legs. The current rapid roster rotation may not give Gnabry the necessary time to build some chemistry with his teammates and become more effective. How Klopp will handle a senior player like Gnabry amidst finding his best eleven remains to be seen.
