As discussed in ACC Roundup Thursday, Wake Forest was sooooo close against Michigan and Texas Tech, barely losing both games.
That changed in the Bahamas.
As discussed in Saturday’s ACC Roundup, Wake ran the basic play that Valparaiso ran in 1998 to upset Ole Miss. Homer Drew called it “Pacer.” We don’t know what Wake calls it, but whatever they call it, the Deacs ran it perfectly.
In a nutshell, the ball has to go as far as possible from under the opponent’s basket towards your own, then the recipient
immediately gets it to a teammate. In Valpo’s victory, Drew’s team just needed a two point basket. In Wake’s case, it had to be a three.
As you will see here, Wake coach Steve Forbes trusted freshman Austin Carr with the inbounds. He is pressured but throws it successfully to Tre’Von Spillers. Myles Colvin starts on the left side near half court and crosses to the right, then heads towards the baseline.
It’s not a perfect pass, but good enough for Spillers to control it and then to shovel it to Colvin. Memphis’ Zach Davis, 6-7, recovers and goes after the shot and gets his hand up, but he’s too late.
It’s one of the prettiest buzzer beaters we’ll see this season and it could be enormous for Wake’s confidence after dropping those two tight games against ranked opponents.
