Newcastle United’s near-excellent start under Matthias Jaissle continued on Saturday with a 2-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur, but attention will necessarily focus entirely on the transfer market with only three days remaining before Tuesday’s deadline.
The Magpies have already spent north of €250 million this summer to bring in seven players, the latest of them Man City midfielder Nico Gonzalez, yet Newcastle is still working on making further additions.
Jaissle confirmed after the win over Tottenham
that the club indeed intends to be active through Tuesday’s deadline while being increasingly selective about any final moves.
“We are realistic. We have high ambitions, and we know what is needed, but the squad is strong,” Jaissle said. “We saw that today, but there are still a couple of days left, and we can then talk again.”
Newcastle has been linked with several attacking options in recent days, including Lille’s Matias Fernandez-Pardo and Stuttgart’s Bilal El Khannouss, while Como reportedly rejected the Magpies’ €70 million (£60.5 million) offer for Martin Baturina.
Jaissle, however, made clear that Newcastle will not make a signing simply for the sake of adding another player before the deadline.
“We know our needs. Ross Wilson is doing an amazing job,” Jaissle said. “We have a couple of days left and will not panic and do something crazy without everyone believing it’s the right decision.
“That’s the most important thing, on a management and leadership level, that we’re all aligned.”
There are also decisions to make regarding potential departures, with Nick Woltemade’s name surrounded by increasing speculation. Most recently, talkSPORT reported on Friday that Newcastle is actively seeking to offload its club-record signing, with Napoli, Borussia Dortmund, and Stuttgart among the clubs linked with a loan.
Jaissle, however, refused to engage with those reports and again treated Woltemade as part of his plans.
“I am not a coach who will take part in media rumours,” Jaissle said. “Nick is a part of the squad, we have a strong squad and we want to be selective in the transfer market with a couple of days left.”
Saturday’s performance certainly strengthened Jaissle’s argument that Newcastle can afford to be selective, as Anthony Elanga and Yoane Wissa excelled again and both scored in the second half to secure Newcastle’s first Premier League victory of the season, while Woltemade assisted on the second goal of the game.
While the Magpies’ squad could still look different by Tuesday night, Jaissle’s message made it sound like Newcastle knows what it wants and what it’s doing, has money available and will continue working, but will not force a deal simply because the clock is running down.
