Newcastle United placed a significant emphasis on recruiting emerging talent during its summer overhaul, and the club appears to have explored adding another of English football’s most coveted teenagers to Matthias Jaissle’s squad.
According to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, Newcastle was among a lengthy list of Premier League clubs that made contact regarding Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Mateus Mane during 2026, although Wolves ultimately refused to consider selling the 18-year-old this early.
“Arsenal,
Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham, Everton, Brighton, Newcastle United and Brentford have all made contact regarding Mane, highlighting the level of interest in one of the most exciting young players in Wolves’ squad,” Bailey reported.
Newcastle will inevitably face substantial competition should its interest develop further. Liverpool and Manchester United are described as particularly strong admirers, with both clubs holding conversations about Mane.
At this point, Liverpool is considered to be in the more advanced position after making contact during the closing days of the summer window and considering both an outright transfer and a deal that would have loaned the teenager back to Wolves. That said, neither option advanced as Wolves maintained that Mane was unavailable.
The player was not pushing to leave Molineux either, although Bailey reported that Mane would have been open to considering a transfer had Wolves sanctioned one. Mane’s camp, however, believed — and still does — spending a full season playing senior football in the Championship represents the best route for his development.
That could leave Newcastle and Mane’s numerous other admirers waiting until next summer.
The interest nevertheless fits Newcastle’s recruitment strategy under Jaissle. The Magpies invested heavily in young players with significant development potential this summer, including Amar Dedic, Sean Steur, Aladji Bamba, Nico Gonzalez, Bazoumana Toure and Matias Fernandez-Pardo.
Mane would represent another prospect in that mold, although previous reports suggested Wolves values the teenager at around £30 million (€34.7 million) while he currently holds a £17.2 million (€20 million) market value.
