Bayern Munich has identified Newcastle United attacker Anthony Gordon as its top option to bolster offense for next season.
Gordon, who is a stylistic and schematic fit for what head coach Vincent Kompany wants to do, looks to be as good an option as anyone, but it will not be easy to get him. Let’s take a look at where things stand as this pursuit figures to be lengthy and complex.
Now what?
According to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, the two clubs spoke about Gordon and the Magpies laid
out their asking price — €90 million, a figure that is expected to drop. Moreover, Bayern Munich is not alone in this pursuit as FC Barcelona, Arsenal, and Liverpool are also involved:
🚨🆕 There have already been club-to-club talks between FC Bayern and Newcastle regarding Anthony Gordon.
Newcastle’s initial demands were up to €90m. Barcelona, Arsenal and Liverpool also informed. Realistically, the fee is expected to be around €75-85m including bonuses.
Bayern will not pay that. That is why talks with other candidates are also ongoing. #NUFC 🏴
Plettenberg would go on to report that Bayern Munich will even pay that reduced fee listed above:
Newcastle’s initial price tag for Anthony Gordon is around €90m. A realistic price could be €75-85m including add-ons. Bayern are unwilling to pay that fee. A potential move to Munich is complicated as things stand. That’s why Bayern are in concrete contact with alternatives
Is this posturing or is Bayern Munich going to exit the race until the numbers become more palatable?
Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie (via @iMiaSanMia) chimed in confirm that talks have opened between Newcastle United and Bayern Munich over Gordon and that the two clubs have a good relationship.
Bayern have opened official talks with Newcastle over a potential summer move for Anthony Gordon. Newcastle will listen to offers for the England winger this summer as they expect him to want to explore his options. Newcastle and Bayern have a good relationship.
Finally, Daily Mail reporter Craig Hope (via @iMiaSanMia) reported that there is an initial €23 million difference between Newcastle United’s asking price and Bayern Munich first salvo:
The disparity in value between Newcastle and Bayern for Anthony Gordon is as big as £20m (€23m)
In a normal summer, there would likely be an expedited process with this pursuit given that talks have already happened. With the World Cup, though, this could drag on for a while. If Bayern Munich truly wants Gordon, it now knows the landscape for how the negotiations will work.
