When Leon Goretzka was presented the opportunity to score Bayern Munich’s record breaking 102nd Bundesliga for the season, head coach Vincent Kompany knew the midfielder would convert his chance.
“I told the team as well: if anyone believes in his moment, it’s Leon. The fact that he’s now broken this record and took it away from our strikers is somehow typical of him, because he always believes in himself. For me, he’s a great role model for the boys. And I’m absolutely delighted because I was just
talking to Mr. (Uli) Hoeneß yesterday about how we would break this record,” said Kompany after his team’s 5-0 victory over St. Pauli (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “It stood for so long – all the more reason to celebrate that we’ve finally broken it. What I generally like is that our team is known for scoring goals. That’s simply part of Bayern and part of our team. I think the boys can be proud of that – but of course, the work continues.”
The work does, indeed, continue. The Bavarians will now prepare to face Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday at the Allianz Arena, holding a 2-1 lead on aggregate.
