According to a report form Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), the much-maligned release clause rumored to be in Dayot Upamecano’s new contract with Bayern Munich does not necessarily mean he will leave in 2027:
After a long hesitation, Bayern have decided to grant Dayot Upamecano his wish of a €65m release clause that can be activated from summer 2027. The extension is now a matter of time. But the release clause doesn’t necessarily mean that Upamecano is planning to leave after one year. It merely
provides him security that he has a fixed option if he wants to take on a new challenge – or that he can leave if he realizes that Bayern are no longer able to win major trophies.
Vincent Kompany played a big role in Upamecano’s decision to stay. There was a conversation between the coach and the player in recent weeks, in which the Belgian once again expressed his appreciation and made it clear that he definitely wanted to continue working with him.
In addition to the release clause, Upamecano was granted his other demands (a salary of up to €20m gross per year, making him one of the top earners at the club – and a signing fee in the range of what Alphonso Davies got when he signed a new deal last year)
BFW Commentary
Hmmm. In one breath Bild is reporting that it is not a big deal, but in the other Upamecano can make the fickle determination that he wants a new challenge or that Bayern Munich could fall apart after one season with him as the figurehead of the backline.
This seems like a bit of damage control to negotiations that seem very one-sided. However, any fan can look at this and see that the bottom line is Upamecano has an easy out as early as 2027. Maybe he stays or maybe he will collect his money and roll after next season, but the clause would not be there if it was not important to Upamecano.
