Slowly but surely, we’re learning what the St. Louis Cardinals were doing behind the scenes at the MLB Winter Meetings this week and the days that follow. A brand new report indicates the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox are discussing Willson Contreras.
Kudos to MLB Trade Rumors for the catch that Chris Cotillo of Mass Live reported the Red Sox have interest in Contreras after missing out on Pete Alonzo and Kyle Schwarber. You would have to believe that this is just one of the conversations
happening in Boston as the Red Sox have also been connected to Ketel Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks. It’s also believed there’s a strong chance that Alex Bregman returns to the Red Sox on a new deal, but that’s another question yet to be answered.
This new report comes just two days after the New York Mets were said to have interest in Willson Contreras, too. You’d have to believe that the Mets will be motivated traders now that they are without Edwin Diaz and Pete Alonzo. Assuming that Willson would be willing to waive his no-trade clause for New York and Boston, the Cardinals could be in position to get quite a return of prospects if the two get into a bidding war.
The St. Louis Cardinals made their first move of the offseason when they traded Sonny Gray to the Red Sox. Could it be that Cardinals President of Baseball Operations Chaim Bloom is about to do more business with his former team? The dialogue that appears to be happening now is intriguing. Hopefully all of us patient Cardinals fans (we are patient, right?) start seeing some movement forward soon on a number of fronts.
