The Seattle Seahawks returned to the practice field on Monday, otherwise known as the eve of league-wide roster cutdowns from 90 players to 53. Head coach Mike Macdonald’s media availability session provided some (emphasis on some) information on injured players, but firmer timelines were not given. Here’s a rundown of what Macdonald said.
Christian Haynes timetable remains TBD
The second-year guard has a very uncertain future after not winning the starting right guard job over Anthony Bradford this offseason. He had a pec issue at the start of August
that cost him a couple of practices, and it was indicated by Coach Macdonald that Haynes suffered a pec injury in the joint scrimmage in Green Bay.
Macdonald didn’t have any timetable on when Haynes could be back. Haynes could be a candidate for injured reserve with a designation for return, especially given there is no place in the starting lineup for him right now.
Jake Bobo, Mike Morris in concussion protocol
Seattle’s third-year receiver is recovering after a horrific collision on a punt return with Tyler Hall in the Packers game. Bobo did eventually get up and walked to the locker room with medical staff, with Macdonald indicating that the fan favorite “is in good spirits.” Morris left Thursday’s joint scrimmage with a concussion, although his severity is seemingly more vague.
Macdonald said Bobo was “doing great” but only offered up, “We’ll see how it goes” for the third-year defensive lineman. Morris may be one to watch as an IR candidate if his concussion is serious enough to warrant missed time.
Tory Horton, Tyrice Knight on course to fully practice next week
Horton missed a few practices and the Packers scrimmage and preseason game with an ankle sprain suffered against the Chiefs. The rookie wide receiver’s injury was deemed to not be too serious at the time.
Knight had been absent over the past couple of weeks due to an unspecified medical issue, as well as a knee injury. The second-year weakside linebacker returned to practice on Monday, with the expectation that he’ll be able to practice in full next week.
Macdonald said of Horton, “Tory’s kind of on the Tyrice timetable. Hasn’t practiced [in] full. Ramping up into next week, projected to practice full some point next week.”
Brandon Pili also back soon
It turns out the reason why Brandon Pili didn’t play last weekend was due to injury. It somewhat slipped under the radar but Macdonald noted after the Chiefs game that Pili may have suffered a chest contusion, so presumably that’s what he’s dealing with.
Macdonald indicated that the nose tackle is on the same timeline as Horton and Knight.
Too early to determine Uchenna Nwosu’s Week 1 availability
Nwosu was cleared to practice two weeks ago after starting training camp on the PUP list, having undergone offseason knee surgery. While Nwosu practiced on Monday, he hasn’t actually come off of PUP yet. It should nevertheless be a formality that Nwosu will be on the active roster on Tuesday once final roster cuts are made. As far as Nwosu being ready for Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers? Macdonald said the veteran pass rusher “looks great,” but “we’ve got to kind of play it day by day at this point.”
Johnathan Hankins still not back
“He hasn’t done intense football workouts yet,” Macdonald said of Hankins, who’s been on the non-football injury list with a back issue.
If Hankins remains on the NFI list past Tuesday then the veteran nose tackle would miss at least the first four games of the regular season. Macdonald added that his back injury is “not season-ending or anything right now.”
