Manuel Neuer has been a metaphorical wall for Bayern Munich since joining from FC Schalke 04 in 2011. The 39-year-old has bailed his side out countless times with clutch reflex saves, been a key extra
man in build-up play, and even defined a generation of goalkeepers by revolutionizing the sweeper-keeper role. After an impressive start to the 2025/26 season, it’s no surprise Bayern are reportedly looking to extend Neuer’s contract by an additional year. Another year of ‘Manu’ will be music to the ears of Bayern fans, however, there is one man in particular that will be dreading it.
Neuer has not just been a wall for Bayern, but for Alexander Nübel as well. The German keeper, once touted to be Neuer’s long-term replacement, has spent season upon season on loan, waiting for his shot between the sticks at Bayern. However, should Die Rekordmeister re-up Neuer’s contract, the opportunity Nübel has been waiting his entire career for may never come to fruition.
The latest report from Sport Bild’s Tobi Altschäffl (via @iMiaSanMia) suggests that if Bayern do sign Neuer to additional year, it will spell the end for Nübel’s ambition to become their number one goalkeeper.
Another contract extension for Manuel Neuer would mean the end of any ambitions Alexander Nübel had to become Bayern’s #1 goalkeeper. Internally, Bayern are of the opinion that if Neuer’s contract is extended, Nübel would have to be sold. Price tag: €20-25m – too much for Stuttgart, but realistic for mid-table Premier League clubs
Never say never but, it is unlikely that Alexander Nübel will be deputising as Bayern’s number one.
