AEW’s Maxwell Jacob Friedman and WWE legend Bret Hart share at least one thing in common: Neither man has ever been shy about sharing a controversial opinion.
As such, Hart will probably be little surprised to hear his name being dragged somewhat through the dirt by the younger star.
While doing the press rounds to promote this weekend’s Double or Nothing event, MJF offered some hot takes on The Hitman, who he pointedly called “one of the greatest wrestlers of all time.” Even still, MJF also dissed
Hart by stating the WWE Hall of Famer says “crazy s**t all the time” because he’s “punch drunk.”
He made these comments during a Tuesday (May 19) appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show after mentioning how he once cut a promo on Hart at the very first Double or Nothing.
After saying he’s “got no beef” with Hart, he went on to say the Canadian legend “got rocked by Bill Goldberg, to the point where he had to retire.”
He continued: “He’s saying crazy s**t all the time, and 99% of the time, it doesn’t make sense. I just think homie is punch drunk. God bless him, he should be.“
MJF then added: “He’s one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. He’s no Shawn Michaels, but he’s one of the greatest of all time.”
Helwani interjected to say he felt Hart is “so much better” than Michaels.
“I have a reason to pretend Shawn Michaels isn’t better than Bret Hart, because he’s the WWE NXT guy, but I’m not going to sit here and do that,” MJF replied. “He was a better talker, he was more athletic in the ring, he was the better wrestler, he was more exciting. He drew you in more.
“Bret was good at a time period where he was able to get away with being an incredible work rate guy. His promos were good, but they weren’t like, ‘Woah!’”
MJF went on to claim Helwani prefers Hart because both men are Canadian before saying: “I’m not even talking shit. He’s a legend, a hall of famer, he’ll go down as one of the all-time greats. But when you put him bar for bar against Shawn, I never understood the comparison.“
Friedman wrapped up the topic by saying he’s “getting sick” of the Shawn-and-Bret debate, because he feels Steve Austin is the “Mecca” of wrestling and the greatest of all time.
What do you think, Cagesiders? Do you agree with MJF that Hart is “punch drunk”? What about his take on the Shawn-Bret-Steve debate? Let us know in the comments.
