Former professional boxer Prichard Colon died today (Thurs., Aug. 13, 2026) at 33.
Colon’s father and former trainer, Richard Colon, confirmed his son’s death in a post on Facebook. A cause of death was not disclosed.
“Good morning, my people. I regret to inform you of the passing of my son Prichard from this earthly world; NOW HE IS in a better world,” Richard wrote. “I did everything possible to fulfill HIS WISH, HIS DREAM of bringing him ON VACATION to Puerto Rico as much as he desired but COULDN’T.
Thank you for so many years of love and prayers. As much as you can, please keep us in your prayers.”
Colon had required full-time care since suffering a severe brain injury during his fight against Terrel Williams on Oct. 17, 2015, in Fairfax, Virginia.
During the bout, Colon absorbed repeated punches to the back of his head and complained to referee Joseph Cooper about the blows. The fight continued, and Colon was knocked down twice in the ninth round.
Colon’s corner removed his gloves after the round, mistakenly believing the fight was over. Cooper subsequently disqualified Colon.
After returning to the dressing room, Colon became dizzy and nauseous before collapsing. He was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital and diagnosed with a subdural hematoma. Colon underwent emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain and remained in a coma for 221 days.
Colon eventually emerged from the coma but continued to experience significant complications from the injury. His family provided his care throughout the following decade.
The Puerto Rican boxer entered the Williams fight with a perfect 16-0 professional record, including 13 knockout victories. The disqualification loss was the final appearance of his professional career.
Colon made his professional debut in 2013 and competed 17 times before his career ended. In 2021, the World Boxing Council named him an honorary champion.
The World Boxing Organization and World Boxing Council were among the organizations that acknowledged Colon’s death Thursday.
