FC Augsburg’s Robin Fellhauer was on a mission from the opening kickoff against Bayern Munich during his team’s 2-2 draw with the German Rekordmeister.
Fellhauer revealed that Die Fuggerstädter studied Bayern Munich’s kick-off tactics and had a distinct plan to disrupt their opening routine. That strategy led to the shocking opener as Fellhauer scored just 8.4 seconds into the game.
“We discussed very clearly before the game what Bayern’s kick-off routine would be: they would play the ball back to
Manuel Neuer, who would then launch it forward. So my job in that situation was not to let Alphonso Davies block me off, but to keep running through and prevent the goalkeeper from playing the ball with ease. In this case, it worked brilliantly. I got past Davies relatively easily and then saw that Manu had let the ball get away from him a little bit. So I just tried to put him under as much pressure as possible and it worked,” Fellhauer told Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
That kind of creativity and thorough scouting has become a staple of FC Augsburg under coach Manuel Baum. As for Bayern Munich, the play stands as a stark reminder that someone is always watching and looking for an edge.
For Bayern Munich fans, the predictability of the team’s approach and the lack of effort on the play against the determined Fellhauer are two aspects of the team’s play that supporters will surely not want to see again.
It was a harsh (and maybe embarrassing) lesson to learn, but it could be one that the team uses as a learning experience to prevent such things from happening in the future.
