The Philadelphia Eagles have placed quarterback Jalen Hurts on the injured reserve.
Hurts will now be out for the next four weeks, and his earliest possible return is after the New York Giants travel to Philly to take on the Eagles in Week 9.
While Hurts will be eligible to return following the Eagles’ Week 11 bye, Adam Schefter reports that Hurts is considered sidelined indefinitely. The move is in response to the blood clot which has become an increasing concern for both Hurts and the Eagles. The blood clot was
originally caused when he was cleated earlier in the season and he played through the injury in the Eagles’ Week 5 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
However, tests have since shown that the clot has moved, sparking significant concern.
ESPN is reporting that Hurts could be treated with blood thinners, and the average treatment course being six weeks. However, it’s possible that he could be sidelined for as long as three months, which would effectively be season-ending.
The Eagles are tied with the Dallas Cowboys at 2-3 on the season, and 1.5 games behind the first place Giants. Philly’s season started as disappointing before quickly spiraling after the retirement of RT Lane Johnson, injuries to RB Saquon Barkley and WR DeVonta Smith, and the trade of OC Cam Jurgens. The loss of Hurts is yet another significant blow to the Eagles’ season.
The Giants will have their own bye week in Week 8, and will play the Eagles immediately after in Week 9. That game is followed by a home game against the Washington Commanders in Week 10 on Thursday Night Football. Nobody wants to see an opponent deal with injury, particularly something as potentially serious as a blood clot. However, this turn of events is another opportunity for the Giants to extend their lead over the Eagles in the division.
