Nebraska 3 – South Dakota State 0: 25-18, 25-20, 25-15
I do have something to admit to everyone….. I didn’t pay the $10 to watch the stream. Although I hate missing a Husker volleyball match, I wasn’t going to pay for their streaming network. I already pay for every streaming service under the sun so why can’t it be on one of those? I know SDSU is strict about their streaming but still. Oh well.
Instead of watching the match, I was able to listen to it on the Husker radio with John Baylor and Lauren
Cook West on the cal, per usual. This is actually the first match I have listened to so it was cool to hear John Baylor’s famous “kaboom” on kills from girls like Andi Jackson.
From the sounds of it, Husker fans weren’t able to get too many tickets to this match. John Baylor said there was a lot of blue, and not too much red. It sounds like the only way to get tickets was through 3rd party services and not a lot of SDSU fans sold them on there and kept them for themselves.
Dani Busboom Kelly started the same lineup she’s been starting over the first two matches, but quickly inserted bench players to get them some playing time in these non conference matches. Harper Murray played in only the 1st set of tonight’s match and recorded 3 kills, hitting .200% on 10 attempts.
We also saw the last two freshman make their Husker debuts: Gabby DiVita and Jayden Robinson. DiVita even recorded a service ace in the 3rd set. With DiVita’s service ace, the Husker team tallied 5 to SDSU’s 1.
Sets 1 and 2 were probably closer than they should’ve been. Set 1 had the Huskers making more mistakes than usual, like service errors, and set 2 was going point for point for awhile, even a few SDSU leads, but the Huskers pulled out wins in both sets.
Set 3 wasn’t as close as the Huskers kept a good gap in between them and the Jackrabbits on the scoreboard. More players like Kenna Cogill, Jayden Robinson, and Keoni Williams got their first action of the match in this set as well.
The only Huskers to play all 3 sets tonight were Teraya Sigler, Virginia Adriano, Bergen Reilly, Andi Jackson, Olivia Mauch, and Laney Choboy. Campbell Flynn and Ryan Hunter did not get to see any action tonight.
The Huskers hit .267% for the match while SDSU only hit .011%. Teraya Sigler was the team leader in kills with 10 while Skyler Pierce .429% with 7 kills on 14 attempts and only 1 error. Bergen Reilly also had a good night at the net with 3 kills on 5 attempts, hitting .600%. She also added 32 assists, 5 digs, and 2 blocks.
SDSU’s top player, Sylvie Zgonc had the match high in kills with 12 on 31 attempts. She ended the night hitting .129%. Hannah Klein was their other offensive star with 6 kills, but she ended in the negative, hitting -.043%.
Nebraska used this match to help some of their underclassmen start to get experience in real game situations. Since the 5 for 5 rule was passed, there are no redshirts so why not give that to them in matches like this.
The Huskers will play their final road matches of this leg this weekend as they travel to Chicago to play DePaul on Friday then Missouri on Sunday in Wrigley Field for the B1G-SEC Challenge that has been going on all week.
Friday’s match is set to begin at 5:00pm CST at Wintrust Arena in Chicago. The match will be televised on FS1.
