The Colorado Rockies will look to split the series with the San Diego Padres and clinch their 42nd win of the season. That would mean they would not be in the history books alongside the Chicago White Sox, with whom they are currently tied for the worst record in the Modern Era (41 wins). Their 108 losses are a franchise record, and they are the first team with three consecutive 100-loss seasons since the Houston Astros from 2011-2013.
The Rox are in the middle of a rough stretch, going just 2-10
in September and having lost 18 of their last 22 games dating back to August 21. This stretch immediately followed a nine-game stretch from August 12-20 where they went 7-2. They have gone 19-34 (.358) in the second half after going 22-74 (.229) in the first half.
Germán Márquez (3-13, 6.31 ERA) will take the ball for the Rockies. Márquez suffered his 13th loss of the season on Tuesday at Dodger Stadium, allowing five runs on six hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out two. Márquez is 1-1 in two starts this season against the Padres, posting a 4.63 ERA with two walks and five strikeouts. In 20 games (18 starts) against the Friars, he has gone 11-4 (Rockies 14-6) with a 4.40 ERA, 29 walks and 119 strikeouts. His 11 wins against them are the most against any opponent with the next closest being the Arizona Diamondbacks and Pittsburgh Pirates (6).
Márquez will face veteran right-hander Yu Darvish (3-5, 5.65 ERA). The 39-year-old is playing in his 13th MLB season, and his fifth with the Padres after spending time with the Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers previously (with a half-season stint with the Los Angeles Dodgers). In his last outing against the Cincinnati Reds on Monday, Darvish pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed three runs (two homers) on six hits with seven strikeouts in the Padres’ extra-inning 4-3 victory. In 12 starts against the Rockies, Darvish is 4-4 with a 5.48 ERA.
Can the Rockies get their 42nd win today, or will the Padres keep pace (or gain ground) on the Dodgers for the NL West crown?
