The United States Men’s National Team close out the group stage at the 2026 World Cup tonight as they take on Türkiye in their third and final match in Group D. While Australia and Paraguay battle to figure out who will take second place, the USMNT are in the new position of entering a World Cup match having already secured qualification to the next round.
Türkiye has already been eliminated, while the USMNT have won Group D, so today’s match is the closest to a friendly a World Cup match can be.
Still, the United States wants to continue building momentum, but will do it without several starters. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino said yesterday that every player who is sitting on a yellow card (Tyler Adams, Antonee Robinson, Chris Richards, and Folarin Balogun) will sit out tonight so that they won’t risk them being unavailable for the Round of 32.
Christian Pulisic might be on track to play at least some minutes tonight as he recovers from the calf injury he picked up in the opener. Cristian Roldan, who is also battling a knock, is questionable. However, most fans would probably want anyone who’s even slightly injured to rest so that they are 100% for the next round.
Despite the friendly setup of the match, it’s the World Cup, and the players will take it as another chance to score some goals and continue to unite the country behind them. We look forward to tonight as Group D reaches its conclusion.
