It’s all or nothing today, for all the marbles — the marbles being a ticket to Budapest, Hungary to take on Arsenal in the Champions League final at the end of the month. Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain played out to a 5-4 PSG win in Paris for the first leg in what was well and truly one of the greatest ever knockout stage matches the competition ever witnessed. It should come as absolutely no surprise that the second leg in Munich is slated to be the most watched match of the season across
the world.
With the attacking prowess both sides possess, it is hard to imagine the second leg won’t go at least a little bit like the first, but for Bayern, they’ll have to win by at least one goal in regular time to force extra time or win by two goals in 90 minutes to secure advancement to the final. Both scenarios are tall orders, but if there’s any side that can unlock Luis Enrique’s side, it’s Bayern and Vincent Kompany will actually be on the touchlines this time around after serving a suspension for the match in Paris.
Predictions have varied as far as who’s going to go on to join Arsenal in Budapest on the 30th, but there is virtually no one predicting a 0-0 stalemate as both Enrique and Kompany have remained adamant neither of them are going to have their side sit back and defend or shy away from their brands of football. We might not see another 5-4 thriller, but the evidence on display from the group stage meeting of 2-1 (Bayern win) and first leg semifinal that had nine goals, neutrals are certainly in for a treat.
Ahead of the match, Sky Sport pundits and sports personalities alike gave their predictions on what will unfold at the Allianz Arena, whether it be in 90 minutes, or 120 minutes with the potential of penalties. All of Lothar Matthäus, Didi Hamann, Julia Simic, Oliver Kahn, Alexander Zverev and Roman Weidenfellar were asked what they thought the score was going to be.
The predictions on Sky Sport (via @iMiaSanMia)
• Lothar Matthäus: Bayern 4-2 PSG
• Didi Hamann: 2-2
• Julia Simic: 2-1 (Bayern wins on pens)
• Oliver Kahn: Bayern wins on pens
• Alexander Zverev: 4-1 or 4-2 Bayern
• Roman Weidenfeller: Bayern 3-1 PSG
Hopefully for Bayern, anyone’s prediction other than Hamann’s comes to fruition.
