Jaylon Thompson looks at the ugly numbers this month.
“I think we don’t hit a lot of homers, we don’t hit for extra bases,” Garcia said after the game.
“So we have to figure out how to score more runs. (It’s) like playing the small game and trying to do something different. “That’s Royals baseball. We play the small game — bunts, hit and runs. So we have to do something different, figure out how to score more runs.”
He also writes that the Royals plan to stick with Lucas Erceg as closer.
The Royals plan
to stick with Erceg as their ninth-inning reliever. However, manager Matt Quatraro has noticed that the “swing-and-miss” has been absent from Erceg’s arsenal.
“He’s got good stuff, and we’ve seen him at his best with us,” Quatraro said. “And he’s a competitor, and that one (Saturday’s loss) really hurts.
“When you give him the ball, you like your chances. And the last game was a little odd. There were things that happened, you know, in the game against the (New York) Yankees. And this one, he was unable to put the guys away.”
Maikel Garcia injured his hamstring over the weekend, but should avoid the Injured List, writes Anne Rogers.
Garcia had an MRI done Sunday morning, and he and the Royals were hopeful it was a low-grade strain, which would mean it heals faster than anything more severe. There’s likely still a chance he ends up on the IL if he doesn’t progress, but for now, it seems they’ve avoided that scenario.
“He’s feeling better,” Quatraro said. “We’re not going to IL him right now. We’re going to reevaluate him tomorrow, have him move around some, and see how he’s doing.”
Carter Jensen made an electrifying catch on Saturday, but it wasn’t enough to spur the team to victory.
“The momentum was there,” Jensen said. “Everybody was fired up. But at the same time, it’s just a sucky game sometimes. Just kind of think everybody’s a little bit at a loss for words. What we’ve been going through, still going through it now with a tough loss like that. It’s about how we bounce back. We have a great clubhouse of guys in here. Fighters. People who aren’t going to give up.”
Matt Strahm was activated from the Injured List.
“I think that’s what made those 15 days so long for me,” Strahm said. “It was watching and knowing there was nothing I can do until Sunday in Texas. And yeah, basically tie yourself to a chair and watch is what it felt like.”
