Manchester United are assessing midfield options ahead of the summer transfer window, with several Premier League-based players under consideration.
Among the names mentioned is Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, who remains under contract at St James’ Park until 2029, with the option of an additional year.
The Sun reported on March 12 that “SANDRO TONALI is on Manchester United’s shortlist of possible midfield targets,” adding that the Red Devils are monitoring multiple players with top-flight
experience.
“United sources say Tonali is one of several Premier League-experienced midfielders that the club are monitoring,” the report states, alongside Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, Alex Scott and Carlos Baleba.
Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan in 2023 in a deal overseen by then sporting director Dan Ashworth. Tonali later signed a secret one-year contract extension during his ten-month suspension while Ashworth moved on to join Man Utd.
The report notes that Newcastle’s European qualification prospects could influence transfer discussions, with the club facing the possibility of missing out on continental competition next season and thus putting Tonali in a tough position regarding his future.
Man Utd have not made a formal approach for Tonali yet, and no offer has been reported to date. Tonali’s long-term contract position would likely require a significant fee if negotiations were to progress, with Newcastle likely asking for a figure in excess of what the Magpies paid to bring the Italy international to Tyneside.
