Nothing against Jordy, of course.
But, let’s face it, a “HUSKERS SOFTBALL MVP!” poll would not exactly drip with suspense. So, quite simply, after Jordy, who’s the one player the Huskers could not do without?
Now, some deep thought could get interesting. I included Jessie Farrell here, but if she went down, Carlie Muhlbach has shown she could probably step in and run with the job. I mean, I’m wondering if she’s been working at first, a la Scott Hatterberg, just get to get her bat into the 2027 lineup.
Ava Kuszak or Hannah Camenzind? No one else has played short in the last two years and Hannah Cam’s bat has become pretty irreplaceable even if Natalia Smith could take over in left full-time. Sammie Bland and Lauren Camenzind have a former All-Big 10 backup in Katelyn Caneda. Hannah Coor and Kacie Hoffman may not have a current backup who can swing the bat and take the field to near their production.
But the winner?
Well, her selection didn’t exactly drip with suspense either. And she is very devoid of a replacement who can match her production.
- Lex defeated the total of the other three combined 71% – 29%. It’s not exactly shocking – 24 wins, a crazy strikeout to walk ration and she pitched – and won – in huge situations all season long. If she ends up as the National Freshman of the Year in a few days, no one will be surprised.
- Hannah Camenzind was the only one I thought might give a Alexis a run for her money, and in the final tally she did take 2nd place with 18%. Her leap at the place this season was definitely worth a few wins.
A Couple From a Few Weeks Ago Forgotten as the Diamond Sports Surged.

- The question was phrased as “Does Matt Rhule, given basketball’s success, deserve the same patience and grace shown Fred Hoiberg?” 60% said yes, and that shouldn’t be surprising given that his start has actually been far better than Hoiberg’s horrific first few seasons.
- 77% saying yes to #2 might have been higher as I probably needed to highlight basketball in the Spring decision simply because March Madness is a spring event not winter. M&W hoops, both diamond teams, M&W track and wrestling could well end up being a yes for this. Stay tuned until all are finished.
