If something works, you stick with the doggone thing; I mean it’s just that simple isn’t it?
Strong pitching. Mistake-free fielding. And 7-run innings when you really need them.
Yep, for the second straight day, the Huskers rolled out a 7-run inning, this time in the top of the 6th and the number was perfect as those 7 runs gave them a 9-1 lead which was just right after Alexis Jensen finished off a complete-game 2-hitter by striking out the side to give her 10 for the night and 71 on the season through
40.1 innings against only 4 walks. The score was 9-1 which meant it was over.
The big inning came as the Huskers batted around with virtually the whole lineup chipping in. There was a scary moment when Jensen was hit on the elbow of her pitching arm by a pitch and, obviously in pain, left the game. However, she returned for that three-whiff bottom half, so it appeared as if everything was fine.
Despite everyone chipping in, special notice must be given to Sammie Bland, who had not batted since injuring her shoulder making a diving grab of a bunt against Tennessee in Clearwater, FL. She was entered to hit for Emmerson Cope who had been DP’ing for Sammie. Was she ready to go?
The ball which was absolutely torched on a line over the center field fence would probably say yes.
It was a 2-run shot and gave the Huskers the margin they needed for the early finish to the contest.
It was truly an all hands on deck affair for the Nebraska batters. Only Jordy Frahm had more than a single hit going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks to reach base in all four trips. Bland and Hannah Camenzind each knocked in 2 runs with the other 5 being scattered throughout the lineup.
And Alexis Jensen was stellar in the circle. Those home runs are still an issue – she gave up another to make it 10 on the season, but she’s getting there. Trust me.
The Huskers are back in Stillwater tonight and at the ballpark there tomorrow as they play the first of their remaining two games with Oklahoma State at 2pm on ESPN+ and the Huskers Radio Network. For everyone in Stillwater, see you tomorrow!
