The last selection left in Foxborough from the 2022 draft class will be staying around.
The New England Patriots have reached agreement with Marcus Jones on a contract extension, the organization announced Tuesday. As first reported by NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, it is a three-year deal for the all-purpose cornerback.
Jones, who turned 27 this October, was scheduled to become
an unrestricted free agent next March. The former All-American and Paul Hornung Award winner out of Troy and Houston is now signed through the 2028 season. Voted team captain out of training camp for head coach Mike Vrabel’s 6-2 roster, his Patriots tenure spans 39 games and 19 starts.
Selected in the third round of the of the 2022 draft at No. 85 overall, Jones earned first-team All-Pro honors while leading the league in punt return yards as a rookie. He has accounted for 138 tackles, one sack, four forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, five interceptions and a touchdown in the secondary. He also stands with one touchdown as a wide receiver and two touchdowns as a punt returner.
His career includes 1,362 snaps on defense, 24 snaps on offense and 256 snaps on special teams.
Last month, Jones was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time after setting a single-game franchise record with 167 yards on punt returns. In a stretch of four games since then, the 5-foot-8, 188-pound slot corner has had a hand in eight passes defensed and four tackles for loss, putting him in select company.
The Atlanta Falcons visit Gillette Stadium on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET.
