Announced on Saturday evening, head coach Sherrone Moore has hired Kerry Coombs to be Michigan’s new special teams coordinator.
This news comes just three days after Moore fired former special teams coordinator JB Brown.
“Coach Kerry Coombs is a proven, exceptional football coach, and we’re thrilled to welcome him to our program,” Moore said via a press release. “Kerry’s leadership of our special teams will be invaluable. His expertise in teaching and mentoring has consistently shaped both outstanding
athletes and remarkable young men — including some of the nation’s top special teams players and cornerbacks. We’re proud to have Kerry, Holly, and their family join the Michigan Football family.”
Coombs has 42 years of football coaching experience from the high school, college and NFL ranks. He was most recently the cornerbacks coach and special teams coordinator at Cincinnati from 2022-24. Prior to that, he was the defensive coordinator at Ohio State from 2020-21. He also coached the Buckeyes’ cornerbacks and special teams from 2012-17 before going to the NFL for two seasons to coach the defensive backs for the Tennessee Titans.
He is also a proven recruiter, as Coombs was the 2017 Rivals.com National Recruiter of the Year, per Michigan’s press release. He was also the Big Ten’s Recruiter of the Year three different times.
All in all, Coombs should be a massive upgrade over Brown. He has a ton of coaching experience and is known as a good recruiter. Brown was also a solid recruiter, but he was ineffective as an on-field coach. Coombs provides the best of both worlds and should get the Wolverines to where they need to be in this department.
