Early injuries, brief scare headline Day 2 of 49ers training camp practice
“Green made an outstanding play when he made a perfectly timed move to break up Purdy’s pass intended for Cowing.
Morris highlighted Jones’ ability to make plays. But, he said, Jones also has been guilty of surrendering too many plays.
“That’s the biggest key,” Morris said. “When you play corner in this league, there will always be play (opportunities). You got to learn those play ops and when to take advantage of them. He’s
one of those guys who can take advantage of them.”
In four NFL seasons, Jones has eight career interceptions, four of which he returned for touchdowns.”
49ers QB Brock Purdy and DC Raheem Morris share training camp updates
“[Renardo Green] is showing it. He’s shown the ability to go out there and play at an elite level from off, from bump. He’s shown the ability to be able to take it from the classroom to the field. He made a big time play today. He’s showing up in a big way. He showed up at OTA days. He’s exciting. He’s got great length. He’s got great ball skills. He’s got all the ability in the world. And now as you say, time to go out there and do it. So, let him keep continuing to do and continue to grow and continue to play and I think get the best out of players.”
49ers Training Camp Questions (paywall)
“Ji’Ayir Brown’s best role is a big nickel, hanging around in the box. He told Dieter and I as much at the end of last year. He prefers it down there. But he was the only one really capable of communicating.
Marques Sigle’s year two leap or lack thereof might quietly be the most determining factor of this defense. If he makes good on the highs he showed (the lows were, yeah, low), he’s the clear free safety.
And Malik Mustapha. He was tremendous his rookie year but never looked comfortable coming back mid-season from a knee injury. How healthy and confident he is will go a long way.”
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan nearly lost an eye in car accident, says Chris Simms
“He’s healing,” Simms said. “His face looks a whole lot better, but this concussion, of course, being a part of that kind of accident, is lingering, and it’s giving him issues, and he’s certainly still dealing with that.”
49ers rookie Romello Height leaves practice on a cart with cramps
“Even if Height is fine and it ends up being nothing more than cramps, the 49ers could still look to add a veteran pass rusher if Mykel Williams isn’t ready for the start of the season. Haason Reddick, Joey Bosa, Leonard Floyd, Kyle Van Noy, and Jadeveon Clowney would all be fits.”
Kawakami: What’s new with the 49ers? A healing coach, a changing defense, speed on offense (paywall)
“[Now there are times with] a five-man front or the presentation of a five-man front and dropping one out and playing those games with the quarterback and the protection.”
An early thought: Other than Nick Bosa, I don’t know if the 49ers have the hybrid linebacker/edge rushers to really do this. If they feel like they’re one pass rusher away from possibly doing some big things this year, I could see them get pretty aggressive on the trade market before the Nov. 10 deadline.”
