Like all Barcelona fans, Hansi Flick is very excited about the team’s start to the season with five wins from five games in all competitions and a very high level of performance, especially in attack.
The depth of Barça’s squad is the most exciting part of the great start, with the coach able to call upon several players in all positions who can maintain the team’s level even as Flick changes the side from game to game.
Hansi was asked at a press conference on Saturday about the depth of the squad
compared to last season, and the boss confirmed he feels this group is stronger and also gave special praise to Pau Cubarsí, who has carried his fantastic World Cup form into the new campaign.
“The squad is better than last year’s. We talk a lot about the attack, because they score a lot of goals, but for me, the defense is very important. And I see that everyone is performing at a fantastic level. After the World Cup, Cubarsi is playing at a different level. I’m very happy. He has confidence and is focused on his body. He has improved physically, especially for his position. He’s playing fantastically with the ball, whether alongside Christensen or Gerard. We’ve done a fantastic job.”
Cubarsí has indeed been a level above last season and does look stronger in one-on-one duels since the World Cup, and he seems to get better every game as he gains more experience.
And Flick is right that this season’s squad looks better than last year. It feels like there are more quality options in every position, and the group fits perfectly together and is playing at a crazy level to begin the campaign.
Ups and downs will happen, but if the coach feels this strongly about his squad, we should too.
