The backstory on Bayern Munich’s interest in Eintracht Frankfurt outside-back Nathaniel Brown continues to unearth details that make it seem like the 22-year-old might not just be a contingency plan for the unpredictable injury situation with Alphonso Davies.
Per a report from Sport Bild journalists Julian Agardi, Christian Falk, and Johannes Wolf (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has made it a “priority” to bolster the left-back spot:
Vincent Kompany spoke to Nathaniel
Brown after the end of the season and explained his plans with him. For a long time, Kompany was fully relying on Alphonso Davies and saw no need for a significant reinforcement at left-back. However due to Davies’ injuries, the coach changed his mind and decided that strengthening the position became a priority, which made Brown a top transfer target. Despite other inquiries from the likes of Arsenal and Real Madrid, Brown only wants to join Bayern. He wants to stay in Germany and sees playing under Kompany as an opportunity to develop further.
If that sounds a little ominous for Davies, it is because it might be. The Sport Bild report indicates that the Saudis have “recently” kicked the tires on what it would take to get a deal done for the Canadian star:
As for Alphonso Davies, Bayern would be willing to listen to suitable offers for him this summer. The Canadian earns €15-20m gross per year and his contract runs through 2030. Representatives of Saudi clubs have recently explored the conditions of a potential deal, but things have yet to become concrete.
For the Saudis, Davies’ salary is likely not a concern, but for most other clubs, it could be due to Davies’ injury history. It seems unlikely that Bayern Munich would actually sell Davies this summer, but if the Bavarians are really that concerned about his future viability, the Saudis could potentially give them an out on his contract.
