Since Bayern Munich won the sextuple in 2020, the club’s transfer business has revolved more around panic moves rather than collaborative squad planning. This has been especially true during the winter
transfer windows. Bayern has made some weird moves, including:
- Sacha Boey: €30M transfer
- Bryan Zaragoza: €4M loan fee
- Yann Sommer: €9M transfer for six-month contract
- Daley Blind: Free transfer
- João Cancelo: Six-month loan spell
Bayern did make a couple of successful deals, like the acquisitions of Jonas Urbig and Eric Dier. Luckily, Bayern has stabilized to negotiate only from a position of strength rather than desperation.
In an interview with Sky Sport (via @iMiaSanMia), Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund said, “we’ve learned in football to never rule anything out completely, but it’s not planned because we’re well-equipped and very important players are returning, Hiroki Itō and hopefully Alphonso Davies, and then Jamal Musiala. Hopefully, those will be our winter signings, and then we’ll be very, very well-equipped.”
Bayern can turn its transfer focus to opportunities on younger players or contract renewal decisions on veterans Dayot Upamecano, Manuel Neuer, Serge Gnabry, Leon Goretzka, and Raphaël Guerreiro.
