Former Cub and Ray Christopher Morel is now a Marlin, sources reveal. It sucks about Devin Williams, who would surely have been a fine Cub. Also revealed: several MLB players have signed with teams that
aren’t the Dodgers. Dennis Franz still wants to know “What is a Met?”
Insiders predict that the Dodgers plan to respond by buying all of their parking lots, and financing the entire minor-league system in the grand St. Louis manner. Frank McCourt was unavailable for comment at press time. So too were Branch Rickey and Kenesaw Mountain Landis.
Sources also indicate that Ian Happ has endorsed the idea of a RH power bat (including but not necessarily Alex Bregman) in the Cubs lineup.
We, of course, await developments.

- Patrick Mooney and Sahadev Sharma (The Athletic {$}): What we’re hearing about the Cubs: A lot of talk, little action at Winter Meetings. “We have a real focus in a lot of areas,” Hoyer said. “It will lead to activity. I can’t tell you when.”
- Maddie Lee (Chicago Sun-Times*): What the Cubs’ signings say about their approach to building the 2026 bullpen. “What we thought about our bullpen going into the season, … we were wrong,” manager Craig Counsell said…
- David Adler (MLB.com*): 5 more free-agent relievers the Cubs could target. “… who should the Cubs target next? Let’s take a look at some options.”
- Meghan Montemurro (Chicago Tribune* {$}): Chicago Cubs have said all the right things about Matt Shaw — but could Alex Bregman still be an option? “Whether we end up signing someone or not, I don’t know,” Hoyer said.
- Brett Taylor (Bleacher Nation*): I can’t help but wonder if this anonymous quote is about Alex Bregman and the Red Sox.“… they are probably staying very short-term again…”
