Bayern Munich clinched a crucial victory in the first match of the Champions League group stage against Chelsea FC in what was an eventful match. In particular, there was a moment in the first half just before the visitors scored where Jonathan Tah appeared to shove Joao Pedro. The referee booked the Bayern defender after brandishing a yellow card for his action, however, the Chelsea camp demanded to see a red card. Vincent Kompany on the other hand, called it a foul on Tah. Confused ? Let’s get
into it.

As Chelsea looked to counter attack in the 28th minute with Cole Palmer, the Bayern backline were scrambling to get back. Jonathan Tah, who was marking Joao Pedro, appeared slower than the rest due to his scuffle with the Chelsea striker. What followed were two events. In the first, Pedro is seen pulling Tah’s shirt vigorously before being shoved to the floor by the big German. The ref played the advantage before booking Tah. The Blues however, benefitted from this scuffle as they gained a man advantage that helped their attack turn into a goal.
The Chelsea coach, Enzo Maresca was seen continuously protesting from the sidelines, demanding that Tah be sent off. Even receiving a yellow card from the ref did not stop that man. Meanwhile, the Bayern coach wanted to see a reverse booking. In the post match interview (as captured by @iMiaSanMia) the defender turned coach gave Bayern’s and a defender’s perspective of the event.
“I actually wanted a foul the other way. I might be biased. I thought his shirt got pulled. He was trying to free himself. He was getting turned, and as a defender your natural instinct is to shake him off. I don’t think it was that big an event (for a red card),” said Kompany.
Do you agree with the ref’s decision ? Or does VK make sense and the goal should have been called off? Or are you just from WAGNH and wanted Tah sent off ?
Bayern Munich hosted Chelsea in one of the most intriguing matchups on the second round of Matchday 1 in the Champions League’s League Phase.
The Bavarians were able to tough out a rugged 3-1 victory in a match that was not all that pleasing to the eye. Harry Kane’s brace and an own goal from Chelsea paced Bayern Munich. While Chelsea did some good things (including a terrific first half counterattack for a goal), the Londoners did not have enough gas in the tank to keep up with the German powerhouse.
