Bayern Munich board member for sport Max Eberl has thrown his support behind Manuel Neuer following the veteran goalkeeper’s costly error against FC Augsburg, making it clear that the club’s long-term plan between the posts remains unchanged.
Neuer’s mistake helped Augsburg get on the scoreboard during Bayern’s 2-2 draw, raising questions about whether Jonas Urbig could receive more opportunities to challenge for the starting role. However, Eberl was quick to dismiss any concerns about Neuer’s standing
within the club.
“Manu made a mistake. It has certainly happened to him a few times during his two decades as a professional footballer. There are absolutely no doubts about Manu for us. We have a clear plan. We’ve been implementing it for almost a year and a half, nearly two years. Manu is our number one, and he will remain so,” Eberl said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
While the Bayern executive reaffirmed Neuer’s status as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, he stopped short of confirming who would start the next match. Vincent Kompany has apparently considered his options, leaving the final decision with the head coach.
“What happens in the future remains to be seen. Who will start tomorrow Vinnie has given it some thought. That’s why I don’t want to get ahead of things just yet,” Eberl added.
The message is clear: Bayern are not about to abandon Neuer because of one costly mistake. The 40-year-old remains a central figure in the club’s plans, but Urbig’s development and the possibility of increased playing time will continue to make the goalkeeping situation worth monitoring.
For now, Neuer retains the backing of Bayern’s leadership. Whether that support translates into another immediate start will be Kompany’s decision.
