Newcastle United are reportedly exploring a move for Porto midfielder Victor Froholdt as part of their summer recruitment plans.
The 20-year-old midfielder has impressed the Portuguese side this season following his recent move from Copenhagen, and he’s attracting enough attention from multiple Premier League clubs as to consider another transfer a real possibility.
According to Football Insider, Newcastle are among the teams monitoring his situation closely.
“Newcastle United are among three Premier
League clubs reportedly exploring a potential deal for FC Porto starlet Victor Froholdt,” the report says.
The report is focused mostly on the interest Newcastle has shown in Froholdt because of the uncertainty surrounding Sandro Tonali’s future at the club, with the Magpies and the Italy international likely to part ways.
Froholdt has scored six goals and assisted six times through the first week of May in league play at Porto. President Andre Villas-Boas previously highlighted the player’s potential during negotiations to sign him, and it sounded like a sale won’t be cheap nor easy to sanction on their side.
“It was a difficult deal because FC Copenhagen knew they had a diamond,” Villas-Boas said. “Victor has already changed – he has developed from the Victor we brought in from Copenhagen.
“He is already showing signs that he can become a great player. If he continues that development, he can become one of the best.”
Froholdt remains under contract until 2030 and is understood to have a release clause of around £73 million, which is obviously a figure Newcastle won’t match considering their prior transfer whiffs and the risks involved in such a humongous deal.
That said, if the player forces his way out somehow, then NUFC might have enough leverage to complete a transfer for a cut price.
