The New England Patriots have plenty to prepare for as they get set to face the Pittsburgh Steelers, and tight end Darnell Washington presents a particularly difficult matchup.
Patriots defensive coordinator Zak Kuhr singled out Washington as a “big challenge,” pointing to the fourth-year tight end’s rare combination of size, strength and athleticism.
Washington has increasingly become an important part of the Steelers’ offense, particularly in the running game. His ability to block at the point of attack
while also serving as a legitimate receiving threat makes him a difficult player for opposing defenses to account for.
“He’s athletic,” Kuhr said. “Obviously, his size and strength are no joke.”
Kuhr noted that Washington’s impact as a blocker has been evident on film, but his versatility extends beyond simply creating running lanes. When Washington gets the ball in his hands, his combination of power and athleticism can create problems for defenders.
Despite the Steelers running a less tight end-heavy offense under new head coach Mike McCarthy, Washington played 43 of the team’s 67 total offensive snaps last week.
Kuhr also emphasized that Washington can make the first defender miss, putting additional pressure on the Patriots to tackle well and maintain proper technique.
“He’s a great piece to have,” Kuhr said. “He is a conflict piece.”
That description could be particularly significant against Pittsburgh. Washington’s presence can force New England to account for both his blocking ability and what he can do as a receiver, creating uncertainty for the defense before the snap.
For the Steelers, Washington’s continued development gives them another way to stress opposing defenses — and New England clearly views the 6-foot-7 tight end as one of the more difficult players it will have to handle.
Last year, Washington didn’t record a single catch against the Patriots. This year, he’ll hope to change that.
