Could the Cleveland Browns have won in Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals despite K Andre Szmyt missing two kicks (field goal, extra point)? Sure, a lot of other plays could have changed the actual outcome of the game. Could the Browns still have lost even if Szmyt made both kicks? Sure, Bengals QB Joe Burrow has a lot of talent around him on offense, so who knows how the final two plus minutes of the game would have played out.
We do know that, besides lauding the rookies, Cleveland’s kicker curse
and kicker options in NFL free agency have been the main focus Sunday night and Monday.
Tuesday, we saw K Jake Moody waived by the San Francisco 49ers, while the Buffalo Bills signed K Matt Prater to their active roster and K John Parker Romo was signed to the Atlanta Falcons practice squad.
What about the Browns kicker news? Who did they work out? Who might they sign? When might Szmyt’s waiver process start?
Answers: None. No one. No one. Not this week:
Not even a workout of kickers makes it clear that Cleveland plans to ride things out with Szmyt for another week.
The decision fits many previous choices by the current regime, where Deshaun Watson, Dustin Hopkins, Jameis Winston and others were given far more chances than fans and media would prefer. There is always a chance the Browns will make a kicker decision on Wednesday but, given the normal cadence, it seems unlikely. Claiming Moody would be the other possible option.
What is your reaction to the Browns not only not signing another kicker but not even bringing one in for a workout? Is it possible that this could help Szmyt’s confidence and Week 1 was a blip on the radar?
