What we learned as Cowing, Stribling power 49ers’ preseason win over Chargers
“Cornerback Renardo Green, who is being pushed to retain his starting job, might have suffered a major setback on Thursday night. Veteran cornerback Jack Jones entered the game at the start of the second quarter.
It is never a good sign when a player exits any game with a hamstring injury. And that is what happened in the first quarter of the 49ers’ game against the Chargers when
Green left the lineup.
Chargers rookie
receiver Brenen Thompson, a fourth-round pick from Mississippi State, had a couple of steps on Green on a deep route. Former 49ers quarterback Trey Lance was off-target and the pass fell incomplete. But that is likely the play on which Green felt something in his hamstring.

“Tuesday’s joint practice with the Chargers saw the 49ers’ secondary get torched by two-time Pro Bowl quarterback Justin Herbert, whose lone series Thursday ended in a punt after six plays. Deommodore Lenoir, the starting cornerback opposite Green, played tight coverage on Chargers wide receiver Ladd McConkey ahead of a third-down incomplete that stalled the drive.”

But there are times he makes spectacular plays happen because he’s so freakishly long and athletic. That said, they also look so spectacular because he’s frequently out of position. Black had back-to-back runs of eight and nine yards, moving the sticks on his own, and advancing the offense into Chargers territory. The surprise third-round draft pick recorded a respectable 33 yards on eight carries in his preseason debut.”

And I just been playing catch up the whole time. Samuel returned to the Niners in what Williams calls “probably the best shape I’ve seen him in since I’ve known him.”
