Kennadi Williams, pinch runner extraordinaire and daughter of Husker basketball coach Amy Williams, came roaring around 3rd base as the 10th run and an 8-run lead for the Huskers which would potentially end the game if Jordy Frahm could shut things down in the bottom of the 6th.
Then the high school track star stumbled and fell. But instead of getting of getting to her feet, she just crawled home with the run – and many Minnesota fans were probably cheering her on silently to end a weekend in which
they were swept and outscored 32-4.
Sunday’s scrap was close – for about 3 innings. Starter Hannah Camenzind was lifted after two, not that she was torn up too badly on the scoresheet. However, she was hit consistently hard and Coach Rhonda Revelle, with a fresh Jordy Frahm in the clip and Minnesota ace Sydney Schwartz on the flat hill, decided to pull the trigger in the bottom of the 3rd. Three up, three down. Good decision.
In the top of the 4th, the Husker bats then exploded for 4 runs and Frahm, as she so often does, helped her own cause with a 2-runs laser to left to pump the lead to 6-2. From there, it was cruising time as she threw 4 perfect innings while striking out 6.
Still, the Huskers were looking to head home a little quicker. In the 5th frame, there were some odd doings which I described here.
Then they erupted for 4 more in the 6th to provide the run-rule margin for the 11-2 win and another Big 10 sweep.
Jesse Farrell was the offensive MVP as she went 3-for-4, piped a 2-run homer in the 2nd to take back Minnesota’s short-lived lead, knocked in 3 runs and crossed the dish herself 3 times. Six Huskers in all managed multi-hit games and everyone got to hop on the bus early to start warming up after three straight games in which the temp never hit 50.
They look ahead to another match-up with UNO before the Iowa Hawkeyes head to Lincoln to try and mess things up those lousy Squawks always do these days. Hopefully, the Huskers saved a few runs for them.
