The Dallas Cowboys’ defensive line makeover started last year with two veteran additions, and it continued this offseason with, among others, Otito Ogbonnia. What does this free agent newcomer bring to the table, and how secure is his roster spot ahead of Dallas’ 2026 training camp?
Background
Years in NFL: 4
Acquired by: Free agency (2026)
The Chargers made Ogbonnia a fifth-round pick in 2022. He entered the NFL with a problematic tweener label, not quick enough to be an attacking DT and lacking the technique
to be a consistently effective nose. Los Angeles worked to develop him into a 1-tech and he played in a backup role as a rookie, but went on IR that November with a ruptured patellar tendon. That injury would stunt his development, lingering into 2023 and keeping him on PUP until nearly a year later.
In 2024, Ogbonnia was healthy and started all 17 games at nose tackle, but his missed time showed with poor performance grades in run defense. The Chargers gave him one more shot last year, demoted to a backup role. He did show limited improvement in the first half of the season, until an elbow injury cost him some time. He only played in nine games in 2025, adding to a bad history and hurting his stock in the last free agent market.
With a big need for more size up front, the Cowboys signed Ogbonnia early in 2026 free agency. With Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark already in place, Ogbonnia’s arrival helped set up the trades that sent Osa Odighizuwa and Solomon Thomas to new teams for additional draft capital.
Contract Status
Years Left: 1
2026 Cap Hit: $2.4 million
While Dallas hopes to benefit from untapped potential in Ogbonnia, they also gave themselves an easy out if the reasons for his low stock manifest again. His contract only has $500k of guaranteed money, so the Cowboys could cut him at any point with only a minor penalty. That Ogbonnia agreed to this deal, especially so early in free agency, tells you how he and his agent felt about his market.
2026 Projections
Role: Rotation/Backup DT
Roster Chance: 85%
If Ogbonnia can stay healthy, there’s little chance he’s not making the roster. He was targeted early in the offseason and fills a specific need as a nose tackle, though he’s expected to share that role with Kenny Clark at times. But in other schemes where size is needed, Ogbonnia is one of the few DTs this summer who brings the requisite mass.
The one guy who can probably knock Ogbonnia off the roster is Jay Toia, a seventh-rounder last season. Coincidentally, he and Ogbonnia were teammates for one year at UCLA in 2021. Toia is younger and also seen as a NT prospect, but he had a rough rookie year. When Ogbonnia was brought in, it felt like a statement about how much faith Dallas has in Toia’s upside. But both players have opportunities to either change that narrative or bring it to fruition.
Other DT prospects like Jonathan Bullard and L.T. Overton, plus several UDFAs, will be jockeying for different roles in the rotation. Ogbonnia’s future is directly tied to his ability to clog the middle and improve Dallas’ run defense. More than anything, he’ll need better medical luck than he’s had for most of his NFL career so far. But with little job security in his contract, peformance will also put Ogbonnia under a microscope this summer.
