Personal Thoughts
It was a rough day for the Badgers. Down 24, I thought Wisconsin might look to take Danny O’Neil and some of the starters out to preserve health in a lost game, but the Badgers played their guys to the final whistle.
At running back, Dilin Jones was the No. 1 yet again. Darrion Dupree got 20 snaps, but he and Cade Yacamelli both got a good amount of snaps closer to the end of the game. Regardless of who’s in there, the run game is still struggling, primarily due to the inconsistencies up front.
At wide receiver, Vinny Anthony got a majority of the reps, while Wisconsin continued to split the other boundary role between Chris Brooks Jr. and Jayden Ballard. Two interesting notes: Trech Kekahuna didn’t see a major snap count, which is partially due to Wisconsin’s heavy alignments. But, he’s got to be on the field and find opportunities for plays. Second, Eugene Hilton did not see the field much in this one. He had hovered around 10-15 snaps in the two weeks prior, but Wisconsin didn’t test him against Alabama.
At tight end, Lance Mason continued to pace the group, while Grant Stec and Jackson Acker split the TE2 responsibilities.
Along the offensive line, the Badgers had another shuffling to start the game as Jake Renfro was able to play. However, Renfro was hobbled up with an ankle injury early in the game, prompting Kerry Kodanko into the mix. Then, Kodanko got hurt after one play, so redshirt freshman Ryan Cory came in the game. That made it three redshirt freshmen on Wisconsin’s offensive line.
Renfro came back near the end of the second half, but clearly looked injured. Still, he managed to finish out the game, but Wisconsin needs him healthy and he doesn’t look that way right now. We’ll see how he recovers for next week, now dealing with both knee and ankle issues.
